A Power Constrained Multi-Channel MAC Protocol for a Cooperative Spectrum Access
نویسندگان
چکیده
The Cognitive Radio (CR) is a recent technology that aims at increasing the spectrum utilization under the current static spectrum management. With appropriate CR MAC protocols, the unlicensed users, also called secondary users (SUs), are able to access the unused portion of spectrum in an opportunistic way. These protocols should also provide a coordinated access between the SUs and protect the licensed users (or primary users PUs) from the induced interference. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-channel cognitive MAC protocol based on a cooperative spectrum access, and which enhances the throughput of the cognitive radio network (CRN) subject to a SU transmit power constraint. Our protocol, the RMC-MAC protocol, introduces a new reactive sensing period and a novel recovery scheme to instantly detect the presence of a PU while preserving the continuity of the SU transmission. Simulation results show that the bandwidth utilization is increased up to 25% as compared to the buffering based MAC protocol and up to 45% as compared to a more typical protocol without any handoff mechanism. The forced termination probability is also considerably reduced which improves the overall network throughput. Multi-channel Medium Access Control Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey
Extensive researches on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been performed and many techniques have been developed for the data link (MAC) layer. Most of them assume single-channel MAC protocols. In the usual dense deployment of the sensor networks, single-channel MAC protocols may be deficient because of radio collisions and limited bandwidth. Hence, using multiple channels can significantly ...

The proliferation of wireless services and applications over the past decade has led to the rapidly increasing demand in wireless spectrum. Hence, we have been facing a critical spectrum shortage problem even though several measurements have indicated that most licensed radio spectrum is very underutilized. These facts have motivated the development of dynamic spectrum access (DSA) and cognitiv...

متن کاملAdaptive power-controlled MAC protocols for improved throughput in hardware-constrained cognitive radio networks
Cognitive radios (CRs) are emerging as a promising technology to enhance spectrum utilization through opportunistic on-demand access. Many MAC protocols for cognitive radio networks (CRNs) have been designed assuming multiple transceivers per CR user. However, in practice, such an assumption comes at the cost of extra hardware. In this paper, we address the problem of assigning channels to CR t...
